For the first time in 17 years Grey’s Anatomy fans will be seeing a lot less of Meredith Grey as frontwoman Ellen Pompeo is reportedly appearing in eight episodes.

The hit series has been a fan-favourite ever since it debuted on our screens in 2005 and safe to say the hype is still going strong with the show premiering its 19th season on October 6.

However, the leading actress is believed to have a limited role this time round but will continue serving as executive producer.

Although the number of episodes in season 19 are yet to be confirmed, previous seasons have consisted of 20 episodes.

According to Deadline, Ellen is starring in a brand-new Hulu series that centres around a couple who adopt an orphan they believe to have a rare form of dwarfism but come to suspect their new daughter isn’t the 8-year-old she claims to be.

While her former co-stars Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, and Katherine Heigl bowed out, Ellen has remained as the titular lead for nearly 18 years.

Series regulars  Miranda Bailey and Richard Webber, played by Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr are also returning for the 19th season.

Speaking about the upcoming season, series creator Shonda Rhimes said: ‘I couldn’t be more excited that we get to keep telling the stories of Meredith, Bailey, Richard and all of the other doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial for another season.

‘This is a true testament to Krista Vernoff, the cast, the crew and all the writers who keep the audience on the edge of their seat week after week. And it would not be possible without the generations of incredible fans who have supported Grey’s Anatomy for so many years.’

Due to the programme being the longest-running medical drama, fans have questioned when the cast will be hanging up their scrubs, and that thought has also crossed the Meredith Grey star’s mind.
