A young mother was fatally shot while pushing her 3-month-old infant in a stroller Wednesday night in Manhattan, officials said.

The 20-year-old mother was shot in the head by a gunman who fired ‘from a very close range’ after approaching her around 8.23pm as she walked on East 95th Street in the Upper East Side, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said.

The woman was taken to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Her 3-month-old child was unharmed, police said.

The gunman was last seen dressed in a black sweatshirt and sweatpants. He fled the scene by foot, running east along East 95th Street, police said.

During a press conference Wednesday night at the scene of the shooting, New York City Mayor Eric Adams told reporters: ‘We’re going to find him and bring him to justice. But we need the justice system to make sure this innocent person receives that justice that we’re asking for.’

Adams said there is an ‘oversaturation’ of guns — but emphasized the issue of gun violence is not unique to New York City.

‘When a mother’s pushing a baby carriage down the block… and is shot at point-blank range — this shows just how this national problem is impacting families and doesn’t matter if you are on the Upper East Side or East New York, Brooklyn,’ Adams said.

“We’re going to find this person that’s guilty of this horrific crime,” Mayor Eric Adams told reporters. “We’re going to find him and bring him to justice. But we need the justice system to make sure this innocent person receives that justice that we’re asking for.”
